Islamic Movements (Week-10 MONDAY November 13) Reflection- 4 Readings and Newspaper Articles

Dear all,

For the next week, (10th Week 9:30 - 12:00) you should read the following articles:


NEWSPAPER ARTICLE PRESENTATION: Please bring the newspaper articles. Articles SHOULD BE related with ISLAMIC MOVEMENTS AND PARTIES IN POST ARAB SPRING ERA. Other subjects will not be accepted. PLEASE VERY BRIEFLY SUMMARIZE YOUR ARTICLE IN THE CLASS! I need a print copy (First page) of your article, and please include your full name on it.  

REFLECTION PAPER -4
Please read the following instructions carefully:

In this reflection paper, you have THREE questions. Please answer them all!

1) Based on the articles, 
Islamic Parties and Democracy in Indonesia Insights from the World’s Largest Muslim Country By Jan Woischnik and Philipp Müller
Critical connections: Islamic politics and political economy in Indonesia and Malaysia KHOO Boo Teik and Vedi R. HADIZ 
how do the authors categorize Islamic movements in Indonesia, and based on what conditions? Briefly explain and GIVE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES from the readings and our class discussions. Your answer should be at least 400 words.


2) Based on the article, (Political Islam and the Recent Rise of Islamist Conservatism in Malaysia By Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid), what are the differences and similarities between Indonesia and Malaysia in terms of Islamic Movements and Parties? Briefly explain and GIVE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES from the readings and our class discussions. Your answer should be at least 300 words. 

3) Please answer the following questions based on these four articles on Global Salafism:

  • On the Nature of Salafi Thought and Action. Roel Meijer. Global Salafism: Islam’s New Religious Movement. Columbia University Press, 2009.
  • Salafism in Saudi Arabia. Roel Meijer. Global Salafism: Islam’s New Religious Movement. Columbia University Press, 2009.

* What are the main characteristics of Salafism?
* Why do you think Salafi movements are growing rapidly in Muslim Societies?
* Do you think classical Islamic movements and parties, such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas are failing to provide solutions to social, political and economic issues?
* What are the views of Salafi movements on contemporary social, political and economic issues?
Briefly explain and GIVE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES from the readings and our class discussions. Your answer should be at least 500 words. 

In your answer, please do not use citation; use your own words, and do not copy from the Internet, the books conclusion, or from Wikipedia.   Email your paper to me as MS Word attachments by 12:00 Midnight, on next THURSDAY night, NOVEMBER 16TH. PLEASE include Islamic Movements – Reflection Paper 4 in the subject line of your email, and send it to tugrulkeskin (at) t.shu.edu.cn
The reflection papers should be at least 1200 words. Font size should be Times New Roman, 12 point. You need to email me your reflection papers with Word document.
Criteria: If your paper is less than 1200 words, or late, you will loose 4 points.
