It’s a constant refrain of parents, teachers, and self-appointed guardians of Kultur everywhere – society is getting dumber.
This is a perfectly acceptable accusation, so long as those
pointing fingers are willing to stomach that it’s academic institutions,
not students, who are responsible for declining standards.
Last week I saw for the first time photos of what has
recently been happening at my alma mater. The University of Sydney’s
Fisher Library is having its stacks uprooted, and roughly half the
collection will end up in storage, never to return.
